What to Know About Kambo Treatment

line maste verde

More and more people around the world are becoming aware of Kambo, a traditional Amazonian medicine used for purification, protection, and energetic alignment. If you’re curious about this powerful treatment, it’s important to approach it with respect for its origin and the indigenous peoples who have preserved this knowledge for generations.

Kambo (also referred to as Sapo or Vacina-do-Sapo in Brazil, meaning “frog vaccine”) is not a new trend — it’s a sacred ritual practiced by Amazonian tribes for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. While it may seem new to the global audience, its roots run deep in the forest, where it continues to serve as a tool for healing, strength, and spiritual clarity.

What Exactly is Kambo?

line maste verde

Kambo is the name given to the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor, a giant tree frog found in the Amazon rainforest. This secretion is carefully collected and applied in a ceremonial context to support deep cleansing — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The secretion contains a unique blend of bioactive peptides — including dermorphin, deltorphin, sauvagine, and dermaseptin — which interact with the human body in powerful ways. These compounds are known to promote detoxification, boost the immune system, support pain relief, and sharpen mental focus.

However, the true power of Kambo lies not only in its biochemical properties but in the intention, ritual, and ancestral knowledge that guide its use.

How is Kambo Collected?

line maste verde

The secretion of the giant tree frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) is carefully gathered in a respectful and non-lethal way. Local forest guardians or trained practitioners locate the frog in the early morning and gently collect the secretion by stimulating the skin.

The frog is not harmed during the process and is returned to its natural habitat immediately afterward. The secretion is then dried on small wooden sticks, forming a resinous substance — these are the kambo sticks used in ceremonies.

This traditional method of collection reflects the deep respect indigenous communities hold for the frog, its spirit, and its healing gift.

How is Kambo Administered?

line maste verde

Kambo is always applied within a sacred ceremonial space. A trained practitioner or traditional healer (curandero) guides the process with care, intention, and respect for the medicine. Participants are invited to sit or lie down, often in a quiet circle, to begin the ritual.

Small points or “gates” are opened on the skin using a smoldering stick, typically on the upper arm. The dried Kambo is then mixed with a bit of water and applied to these points, allowing the medicine to enter the lymphatic system directly.

The effects begin within minutes, bringing a powerful and purgative experience designed to cleanse the body, clarify the mind, and strengthen the spirit.

What is the Kambo Experience Like?

line maste verde

Kambo has long been used by indigenous healers to clear the body, mind, and spirit of heavy energies. While the immediate effects may be physically intense, many participants describe a deep sense of calm, emotional release, and inner clarity once the ceremony is complete.

Some report feeling lighter, more focused, and grounded. Others speak of renewed strength, heightened energy, and a clearer connection to their intentions and inner guidance.

Each experience is unique — but what unites them all is the powerful sense of reset and renewal that Kambo often brings.

Honoring the Source of Your Kambo

line maste verde

The integrity of a Kambo experience begins with the source — both of the medicine and the people who serve it. At AYA Healing Retreats, we are honored to collaborate with the Matsés lineage from the Nuevo Paujil region of the Peruvian Amazon — a family who has carried the wisdom of Kambo for generations.

With deep reverence for the frog and its forest home, the Matsés family continues to share this sacred medicine in a respectful and traditional way, preserving both the spiritual and ecological balance of the Amazon.
